Betty Jo Alexander, 85, of Garland entered eternal rest on May 12, 2021. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, May 22, 2021, at New Salem Baptist Church with Pastor Betty Neal serving as eulogist and Bishop Connice Mayes, pastor. Maxey Funeral Home will make burial in Reeds Prairie Cemetery.
Betty Jo was born November 25, 1935 in High, Texas to the parentage of Cordie and Laura Booker.
She accepted the Lord and was baptized at an early age. By age 12, she was singing with her sister Mae Dell in the gospel group called The Pearly Gate Gospel Singers. She was an exceptionally talented singer who traveled throughout the U.S. singing in gospel revivals, was featured on gospel music radio broadcasts and was offered a music recording contract. In addition to her singing talents, she was offered a basketball scholarship to Prairie View A&M University.
She was dearly loved by her family including her sons, Kerry Braxton, Jerry Braxton, Larry Alexander and Leslie Alexander, Jr.; her daughters, Cheryl Council (James), Teresa Dobbins (Ralph), Sandra Dunn (Charles) and Miasha Alexander; her beloved god sons, Joe Alexander and Mike Alexander; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
She leaves loving memories to her surviving brother and sister, James Booker and Mae Dell Furtch.
She cherished the times with all of her friends and her church family and the special relationship she shared with her pastor, Pastor Betty Neal.
