ROBERT CHARLES MICKENS, the oldest of twenty - three children, was born on August 22,1934, in Atlanta, Texas, to the late George and Martha Clay Mickens.
ROBERT MICKENS, loving to work with his hands, attended school to train as a Leather Craftsman where he learned to create beautiful purses, wallets, and belts. After making Paris his home, he owned and operated Mickens Concrete Construction Company for over 40 years where he completed Residential & Commercial projects, employing and mentoring many people. His other hobbies included gardening, barbequing, and playing dominoes. Always well dressed, wearing matching hats and jewelry, he was known by his friends and family as the “grinning man.” He loved Mt. Canaan Baptist, attending regularly as long as his health allowed. He also loved family gatherings at his home where anyone who came by felt welcome to visit and share a meal. No one was a stranger to him. And one of his greatest wishes was “to keep family together, loving one another.” He often said, “The job is hard and tedious, and since there are so many of us, we must never give up, and when I’m dead and gone, please keep the family together.” He entered eternal rest on March 17, 2022.
He is survived by his children; sons, Gregory Akins, Hugo; Paul (Dawn) Franklin, Dallas; Rodney (Rebecca) Thomas, Topeka, Kansas; Derwin Lipscomb, Paris; daughters, Robin Russell, Paris; Tracy Wiliams, Paris, and stepdaughter, Kristi Brooks; loving and caring companion, Vanessa Dirks, brothers, Jimmy Grant, Kerry Grant, Henry Grant, Johnny Grant, Kenny Grant, and Michael Mickens; and sisters, Alice Heath, Patricia Grant, Gina Grant, Mary Stanmore, Mary Black, Barbara Reed, Beverly Griffin, and Karen Hines. He is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by seven sisters and one son, Kim Spraglin.
