Velma Hayes Obituary

Velma Ruth (Red) Hayes was born to the parents of the late Benny
Matthews and Eula Mae Mathis, on March 2, 1942, in Honey Grove, Texas,
and she accepted Christ at an early age.

Velma received her education from Gibbons School and started her career
as a Nurse’s Aide at McCuistion Regional Medical Center, Paris, Texas, and
later retired from St. Joseph’s Hospital.

She enjoyed life and was a friend to everyone and a mother figure to many.
She loved her immediate and extended family and was a mother figure to
all of her children’s friends and loved ones. Velma also lived with a strong
hand that believed in the power of respect that fostered love and respect for
everyone.

Velma became a member at Olive Branch Baptist Church at an early age,
where she served on the mission board as a dedicated and faithful member,
ready to step in anywhere she was needed in the church.

She married Johnny Lee-Hayes (Skidrow) on November 30, 1979. In their union,
they shared seven children. Velma was preceded in death by her loveable husband,
Johnny Lee; her parents, Benny and Eula; daughter, Donetta Rena Mathis-Waits (Kenneth Waits)
and sister, Tommie Sue Cooper.

She is survived by her children: Darrell Keith Mathis of Frisco, Texas,
Tracy Mathis-Hughes of Dallas, Texas, Bruce Hughes of Mesquite, Texas,
Sonya Hughes of Forney, Texas, Jackie Denise Luper (Robert Luper) of
Frisco, Texas, and Stacy L. Hughes of Dallas, Texas. She is survived by her
two brothers, Kethie Ray Hill and Gregory Newman; and two sisters, Kathy
Mayes, and Vickie Mathis. She had seven grandchildren, Kelsey Moore,
Takara Battle, Quartez Waits, Darrell Keith Mathis II (Boomer), Bregayle
Hughes, Me’Kayla Renter, and Anaya Luper; and five great-grandchildren,
Kimorae Eggins-Moore, McKinley Mathis, Zuri Mathis, Zara Mathis, and
Damari Mathis.

The family would like to extend special acknowledgments to Dorothy
Milton; her best friend, Ruth Dockins; and her wonderful sister-in-law,
